Community Service

A huge part of who I am is my involvement in the communities I am a part of. I love to take action and make an impact even if it is just on one person. The people I have volunteered with are more than just a part of community service they are passionate, intelligent, and inspiring.

Waltham Boys and Girls Club

Canto da Terra is an amazing organization that helps all animals in dire need of help. This includes exotic animals such as rats, pigeons, snakes, etc. other than the regular cats and dogs. I volunteered to help with cleaning the several rooms that sheltered over 200 animals and also by organizing events to raise money for the organization.

Cleaning up beaches

I love the beach, I grew up in Brazil and the only time I lived outside of the country was when I lived in Miami for 4 years. So when I revisited one of my favorite beaches and found out that it was extremely polluted I knew I had to do something. So I organized monthly events for around 6 months to help clean that beach from some of the trash that was felt there. Over 20 people showed up to help for every event and we managed to separate the trash so that we would be able to give some of the aluminium trash that we found to some people that sell it for a living

Super Lucida

As an intern for an organization called Super Lucida, I had my first interaction with community service. At the time, I had no idea that I would like community service but I knew I wanted to do something with a creative side so I took an internship for marketing and creation of content for social media. This organization was mainly focused on financial education for adults but they quickly found out that not many adults want to be taught financial education - they don't believe they need help or they don't want to ask for it. However, most of them believe their children should have some sort of financial education so Super Lucida started hosting events for parents and guardians to take their kids to learn more about financial education through games and interactive activities. However, all of the parents would stay around to watch so they ended up learning a lot too. My main job was to capture moments in these workshops and post them to social media so I attended a lot of these events. At first, I was very unsure about all of this - it was very new to me, but I got comfortable with the environment and learned very quickly that I loved being there. I loved the fast pace of the children and I loved looking at the parents' faces when they made the same connections the children were making. It was an amazing experience.

Wise Caring was a volunteering project that I helped co-found in my high school that helped elderly shelters around the São Paulo area. As a part of this project, we visited elderly homes and helped them understand technology a little better and helped them connect with long-distance family members. I spent a lot of time in these homes to keep some of the people there company while doing several activities such as bouquet building and making carnival masks. I also sang at many of these elderly homes because my grandma - who suffers from Alzheimer's has moments of lucidity when I sing to her - I found it helps a lot of patients. We also raised some money for one of the elderly homes during Halloween by selling candy so that they could buy some necessary items after a COVID outbreak in the home.

My high school was an international school that mostly focused on english but all students had to learn portuguese while they were there. I saw a lot of my friends struggling with their homework for something that came very easily to me. So I decided to volunteer at my school to help some kids of years much lower than mine with their portuguese homework. Eventually during my senior year some of the younger students felt comfortable bringing pretty much any homework they had so that I could help them but they could only speak to me in Portuguese which helped them think more about the concepts and help them memorize better. A lot of other students saw me doing this and decided to volunteer as well by the time I graduated there were 10 volunteers I hear there's around 25 now. (I went to a school with 200 kids total)

Makeup and Clothes for Work

My grandma always volunteers and helps out at her church. She is always looking for ways to help out her community. She and my mom organized an event at the church where women and men from the community who were looking for jobs could come and take a crash course on how to get the job that they were looking to get. These were very simple people so we had to start from the very beginning - basic hygiene. My aunt who is a dermatologist also decided to help and she spoke on basic steps to better personal hygiene and stayed for any questions someone may have. My mother - who works in finance - did a workshop on contracts and understanding the corporate world. My grandma asked me to do a workshop on makeup and clothes to wear for an interview - I called it how to make a lasting first impression. The event did so well that over 100 people showed up and we decided to host many more. This is when I knew for sure I had a passion for the fashion and the makeup world.
